He was the son of the Ottoman Sultan Sultan Abdülaziz. He was the heir apparent when his father passed away. Born on October 10, 1857 in Dolmabahçe Palace, his mother was Dürrinev Başkadınefendi. When he was born, his uncle Sultan Abdülmecid was on the throne. At the age of 10, he joined a trip to Europe with his father. On September 1, 1871, he was appointed as the commander of the Hassa Army with the rank of müşir by Sultan Abdülaziz. At the age of 19, his father was deposed and shortly afterwards he was found dead with his wrists slit.
On April 27, 1909, when Sultan Mehmed V ascended the throne, he became the heir apparent, the oldest male in the dynasty after the sultan. He represented the Ottoman Empire abroad as the crown prince. During World War I, he clashed politically with Enver Pasha. He was found dead in his mansion in Zincirlikuyu on February 1, 1916, before he could ascend to the throne. His body was buried in the Mahmud II Mausoleum next to his father Abdülaziz.

Tevfik Biren (1867-1956) was a statesman who served in high-level positions such as minister and governor during the last period of the Ottoman Empire. He married Naciye Neyyal Hanım, one of the first female painters in the Ottoman Empire, and had three daughters from this marriage. He was the father of women's rights activist, translator and writer Necile Tevfik, painter Meliha Tevfik (Yenerden) and Güzin Tevfik.
His memoirs were published in two volumes by his granddaughter Rezan Hürmen in 1993 under the title Abdülhamit II, Constitutional Monarchy and Armistice Period Memories.
