Biographical history

Mehmed Safayhi served as director of the Süleymaniye Manuscript Library from 1937 until November 30, 1970, and was appointed as a classification clerk in 1940. According to a document sent by the Ministry of National Education on June 23, 1961, at the request of Süleymaniye Library Director Halit Dener, Mehmed Safayhi completed his higher education by obtaining a madrasa certificate from teacher Gürdolusu Emin Efendi on 8 Cemaziyelevvel 1332 (April 4, 1914). He retired on November 30, 1970, due to age.
Mehmed Safayhi, who passed away on October 7, 1977, is buried in the Beşiktaş Yahya Efendi Dergâhı Haziresi, next to Abdülhay Öztoprak, the last sheikh of the dergâh and also his father-in-law.

Archival history

Mehmed Safayhi, who worked as a classification clerk at the Süleymaniye Library between 1937 and 1970, personally prepared the alphabetically arranged notebooks, which were used as a guide for cataloguing manuscripts.

Donated to our institution on July 1, 2016, through Prof. Dr. Ersin Nazif Gürdoğan.

Scope and content

Mehmed Safayhi (1890-1977) served as a sorting officer at the Süleymaniye Library Directorate between 1937 and 1970. The 216 files of this collection are categorized under seven headings: bibliographic works, index and miscellaneous works, letters, family, professional documents, miscellaneous, poetry, prayers, and notes. The notebooks, which are available in full text, contain bibliographic information on hundreds of works. The alphabetically successive notebooks were prepared by Mehmed Safayhi during his tenure as a sorting officer at the Süleymaniye Library and can be used as a guide for cataloging manuscripts.

The Mehmed Safayhi Document, whose classification has not yet been completed, consists of 7 sub-funds, the titles of which are given below. Currently, 24 notebooks under the heading Bibliographic Studies in Group A have been opened for research. The classification on the other groups of the Document, of which only Group A has been completed, continues. For this reason, other funds are closed to researchers. The list below constitutes all subfunds of the Document.
